commercial acumen
Bac2 was formed in 2002 by Dr. Graham Murray to develop commercial-scale electrically conductive polymer composites. Mike Stannard joined as CEO in 2005 to expand Bac2’s commercial activities in the fuel cell market and electronics industries. Bac2 is privately held and has raised funding from London Seed Capital, London Business Angels and other committed investors. It has also secured grant funding from the Carbon Trust and the UK’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
The executive team
Mike Stannard, CEO
Mike is an electronics engineer and entrepreneur with a track record of success in growing businesses. He co-owned and managed a specialist construction company for 7 years. Following this, he was responsible for launching the University of Southampton spin out, Offshore Hydrocarbon Mapping (OHM), a company he saw through two funding rounds to a £48 million AIM flotation. He is a major investor in Bac2. Mike holds a Masters Degree in Electronic Engineering from Southampton.
Dr. Graham Murray, Founder and CTO
Graham has 20 years experience working in manufacturing industry in technical and management roles, supporting the European business of a large polymer company. His PhD was obtained researching the novel chemistry at the heart of ElectroPhen and much of his time in industry was spent developing products based on the polymer technology. In 2002 Graham formed Bac2 with the aim of exploiting ElectroPhen's novel polymer properties in new industrial markets.
Jim Totczyk, Director of Operations
Jim is a production engineering specialist. He joined Bac2 in 2007 from Meggitt Avionics where, as Head of Operations, he was instrumental in introducing lean manufacturing processes to the business. Before that he spent 17 years with Brookes & Gatehouse, latterly as Director of Manufacturing, where he worked on polymer moulding techniques for hermetic sealing.
Dr. Ashok Vaidya, Non-Executive Director
Dr. Vaidya is a Chartered Physicist with a PhD in superconductivity and has an MBA from Henley Management College. He brings both commercial and technical expertise to the Bac2 board, following more than 25 years in industry. Dr. Vaidya has commercialised new technology and managed high growth technology businesses during that time. His career includes executive positions with EMI Central Research Laboratories and Thorn EMI New BusinessVentures and as founder and director of Scipher plc.
Michael Burrow, Non-Executive Director
Michael is a former investment banker with 25 years’ experience in corporate finance, specializing in M&A, IPOs, equity issues and other capital markets transactions. Most recently, he was managing director at Lehman Brothers in London with overall responsibility for the bank’s strategic relationships with clients. His education includes a BSc in civil engineering from Southampton University, an MS in structural engineering from Northwester University in Chicago and an MBA from London Business School.
David Stirling, Non-Executive Director
David brings significant industrial experience to the board of Bac2, particularly in international business development. He is Chief Executive Officer of London Stock Exchange Listed specialty plastics company, Zotefoams plc, and non-executive director of MuCell Extrusion LLC, a technology-licensing business based in Massachusetts, USA. Stirling is a Chartered Accountant with a BSc in Mathematics and Statistics, an MSc in Finance and an MBA.
